At 7:55pm on Tues 10/11/16, Mohegan Fire units were dispatched to Damian Way in Cortlandt for a reported chimney fire. Units were advised that the homeowner saw visible fire from the chimney. Upon arrival, units found a active chimney fire and set up the aerial ladder from Ladder 35 for roof operations while other firefighters began to clean the burning logs and embers out of the fireplace and check for extension. Engine 258 stood by a nearby hydrant in case needed. Due to the location of the chimney, our aerial ladder was a few feet short and access could not be gained from the roof due to a very steep slope of the roof on the rear and chimney cap over 10 feet above the roof line. Members checked the first and second floors plus attic with thermal imaging cameras for extension and saw no heat past the chimney pipe. Members also ventilated the smoke from the residence with an exhaust fan. Members then opted to light a smoke flare to snuff out whatever could still be burning inside the chimney pipe. All units cleared the scene by 9pm. Units on scene were 2264, 2267, Engine 254, Engine 258, Ladder 35, and Rescue 32. New York State Police also assisted on scene. We would like to remind everybody to have their chimneys and fireplaces serviced and inspected annually prior to use to ensure proper working order.
