At 10:57pm on Wed night 4/19/17, Mohegan FD was dispatched to Oregon Rd and Heady St in Cortlandt for a reported transformer fire. Upon arrival of units, heavy fire was visible from a high voltage electric transformer substation, along with a confirmed oil leak. Units immediately requested Con Edison Electric on a rush, along with the Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services Hazardous Materials Team and their foam unit. Mohegan Firefighters and New York State Police did ensure that 3 close proximity homes were evacuated and the residents were placed in a safe location in the Cortlandt Town Hall parking lot. The transformer that was burning had a fuel capacity of 2,100 gallons of oil that was fueling the fire. The alarm assignment was also upgraded to a structural response adding Ladder 35 and Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association Volunteer Ambulance Corps 69B3 to the assignment. Due to be magnitude of this incident, the Montrose VA HAZMAT Team was also requested to the scene to mitigate any potential oil runoff. The Continental Village Vol. Fire Department was also requested to the scene with 1 Engine and manpower to assist in operations. During he incident, Peekskill Fire Department Engine 133 and Yorktown Heights Volunteer FD Ladder 51 relocated and stood by at LMFD Station #1 to handle all additional calls in our district. Once Con Edison Electric arrived and de-energized numerous high voltage transmission lines, a coordinated effort between all the agencies involved set up and utilized one 2 1/2" foam line from WCDES Utility 177 (Foam Unit) being fed water from Engine 256, while an additional 1 3/4" hoseline was set up precautionary for foam from Engine 256 and one 2 1/2" blitz nozzle line was set up for potential exposure issues along with an additional 1 3/4" hoseline was stretched precautionary, all from Engine 256. The fire was knocked down after using the foam unit and Montrose VAFD HAZMAT Team members mitigated the runoff water with booms, pads, and speedy dry. the fire was quickly extinguished and members began to overhaul. Once the scene was deemed safe by Con Edison Electric with no further fuel spilling and the fire fully extinguished, units cleared the scene by 3am. The scene was turned over to Con Edison and NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation for cleanup of contaminated runoff and repairs to the substation. Photos are courtesy of CVFD.
