On Saturday 1/27/18 at approximately 8:30am, Mohegan FD was dispatched to a reported ruptured underground propane tank at the M&T Bank located in the Cortlandt Town Center off East Main St in Cortlandt. Upon arrival, members found Paraco Gas technicians on scene with an active rupture of a 500 lbs underground liquid propane tank. The tank ruptured during refueling, and the gas company called the FD precautionary due to the volatility of liquid propane and to standby during the off loading. Members immediately began to use our gas meters to check the building, storm drains, and lower areas around the building and nearby stores/commercial establishments for any readings or odor of propane gas. Engine 252 staged in the nearby strip mall at Rt. 6 and Westbrook Dr to check the lower areas just below the bank for possible readings and continue to meter the area during the operation. Other firefighters stretched a 1 3/4" hoseline from Engine 256, once Engine 256 laid a 5" supply hose from a nearby fire hydrant for additional water supply, if needed. No readings of gas were found on our meters which allowed the gas company technicians to begin to off load the propane gas into smaller tanks. Once completed, the remaining propane gas in the tank had to be burned off to prevent any possible explosion. The technicians set up a relief burn stand in a safe portion of the parking lot to begin to burn off the remaining approximately 30 lbs of propane. With members standing by, the technicians safely started a controlled fire to burn the gas. During this operation, members continued to standby with the hoseline and other members checked the surrounding area with gas meters for any possible readings. Once the gas was burned off, the technicians would begin the necessary repairs, while Mohegan FD began to pack up and go back into service. All units cleared the scene by 11:30am. Units operating on scene were Car 2261, 2262, 2264, 2265, 2269, DC38, Engine 252, Engine 256, Ladder 10, Utility 18, and Utility 80.
