On Monday 3/26/18 at 8:17pm, Mohegan FD was dispatched to an unknown odor inside a residence on Overlook Ave in Yorktown. Upon arrival, units were informed by the homeowner that sulfuric acid drain opener was mixed with muriatic acid causing a chemical odor while attempting to unclog a clogged drain in the bathroom. With this information, The Montrose VA FD Hazmat Team was placed on standby and the Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services Special Operations Chief (Car 2001) was requested to the scene by Car 22610. 2 patients were also found requiring evaluation and Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association Volunteer Ambulance Corps 69B1 was dispatched along with Yorktown/Empress Emergency Medical Services Paramedics. 69B1 then transported 2 patients to New York-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital. The residence was then ventilated and units stoodby for Car 2001. Upon arrival of Car 2263, 2001, and 2003, members gained entry to neutralize the chemicals in the sink with household baking soda. Once the chemicals were neutralized and the residence was ventilated, all units cleared the scene by 10pm. We would like to remind everybody not to mix chemicals together to prevent chemical reactions and potential injuries and hazardous situations.
