On Saturday 12/8/18, at approximately 11:30am during our annual candy cane runs, Mohegan FD was dispatched to Baron De Hirsch Rd in the Crompond section of Cortlandt for a structure fire. Upon arrival, units found smoke showing with active fire in the rear of the residence. The 10-75 was transmitted bringing Mohegan EMS, Croton FD's FAS-Team, Buchanan FD, and Peekskill EMS's Rehab Unit to the scene. Members on scene quickly stretched two 1 3/4" hoselines from Engine 252 to extinguish the fire, while other members set up ground ladders that were pulled off Ladder 35 for roof operations. Engine 254 laid a 5" supply hose from a distant hydrant (over 500 ft away) due to the 2 closest hydrants being out of service. Because this fire occurred during our annual candy cane runs, Santa Claus was sworn in as a member while responding on Engine 254 to this call. Santa assisted us on scene by setting up our supply hose to the fire hydrant. Once the fire was knocked down, members began extensive overhaul and had to cut the roof to access hidden fire. Also assisting on scene were New York State Police and Westchester County Dept. of Emergency Services Battalion 10 and Cause and Origin Team Zone 4. All Mohegan Fire units cleared the scene by 3pm. The Yorktown FD and Putnam Valley FD relocated and covered any additional calls in our district during the fire. All photos are courtesy of FF G. Stretz, unless noted.
