On Sunday afternoon 7/9/23, the Mohegan FD response area began to receive heavy rainfall that was quickly causing flooding conditions, washed out roadways, and flooded structures. By Monday morning 7/10/23, our area received in upwards of 8” of rain. This caused many roadways to be impassable and washed out. Through Tuesday morning 7/11/23, the Mohegan FD responded to a recorded total of 73 Fire/Rescue Calls. Numerous calls have not yet been recorded into the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services CAD system due to a high call volume timeframe and due to Firefighters being flagged down in the field for incidents.

Some of the higher priority incidents included a partial structural collapse on Northridge Rd in Cortlandt at midnight Sunday night due to swift water knocking down the basement wall, which caused a partial structural collapse and also impeded on the residence’s oil tank on the basement. Due to the severity of this incident, the Westchester Department of Emergency Services Special Operations Technical Rescue Team and Hazardous Matériels Response Team. Due to the severity of the collapse and no life hazard, it was seems tht no entry would be made into the residence and the utilities were secured by Con Edison Electric.

During the storm Lake Osceola also rose by approximately 20 feet causing water to rise and impede on numerous structures. Throughout the Fire district, numerous electrical meters would have to be pulled by Con Edison Electric due to high flood waters. The aerial photos are courtesy from Yorktown Police showing some of the flooded areas of our district including the Jefferson Valley Mall, Rt 132/Old Yorktown Rd/Barger St corridor and Rt 202/Rt 35/Crompond Rd with abandoned vehicles in high water.
