On Saturday 7/13/24, Mohegan FD and the New York State Dept of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers participated in a Smokey the Bear 80th Anniversary event from 10am-12pm. The event was set up and held at the John C Hart Library in Shrub Oak. The event started off by the library reading the book “Listen to the Language of the Trees” to the participating community children and families. After that, NYS Forest Ranger Aubrey Russo discussed her job role and showed equipment for wilderness search and rescue, swift water rescue, forest/wildland fires, and law enforcement. Smokey the Bear also attended and talked about forest fires. Mohegan FD Assistant Chief Chris Gravius discussed some basic fire prevention/safety tips to the audience and then everyone went outside to see additional equipment from Engine 256 and the Forest Ranger vehicle. Sparky the Fire Dog also attended and interacted with Smokey the Bear. It was a great day and we thank the John C Hart Library for the invite!
