On Saturday evening 7/13/24 shortly after 7:30pm, Mohegan FD, Mohegan EMS, Yorktown/Empress Paramedics, and Yorktown PD were dispatched to a residence on Glassbury Ct in Yorktown for a reported freon leak inside a residence with multiple people feeling ill. Upon arrival, it was quickly determined that the HVAC did have a potential freon leak based on initial reports. The neighboring townhouse unit was also evacuated as a precaution. Members metered both units and found decreased oxygen levels inside the initial residential unit. During this, the 4 individuals who were feeling ill were treated by the responding EMS units. Due to the nature of this incident, the Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services Hazardous Materials Response Team was requested to the scene to assist. The Fairview FD was also requested to the scene with an additional Chem Pro meter. Upon arrival of the Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services Special Operations units, WCDES Hazmat personnel, and Fairview FD the residence was further metered and it was confirmed that the HVAC had an ongoing freon leak. The residence was ventilated and the HVAC unit was secured. Thankfully all the ill individuals were found to be in good condition and refused medical attention. Once the residence was ventilated, Mohegan FD cleared by 11pm and the resident advised to have the HVAC unit properly repaired.
