Today Saturday 10/12/24, Mohegan FD visited the Lowe's Home Improvement store located at 3200 Crompond Rd (Rt 202/35) in Yorktown for a fire prevention detail. Our firefighters were on hand from 1pm-4pm for this fire prevention detail in conjunction with Lowe’s Fire Safety Day. Our members were on hand with a table set up with fire safety pamphlets, membership applications, and our smoke safety trailer. This trailer allows children and adults to learn numerous hands on safety tips which incorporates theatrical smoke to simulate a structure fire as a finale. Firefighters (volunteer and career) also displayed our equipment from Engine 253. There are giveaways for the children from both us and Lowe’s. Also on hand was Mohegan EMS 69B2. We thank Lowe’s for the invite, which has become an annual visit! Fire Apparatus and units at Lowe’s were Car 2263, 2266, Engine 253, Rescue 32, and Utility 69.

Fire Safety Topics discussed inside the smoke safety trailer were:

1) Dialing 911
2) Stop Drop and Roll
3) E.D.I.T.H (Exit Drills In The Home), with a focus on having a safe spot for everyone to meet (mailbox, tree, neighbor’s house etc) in case of a fire or emergency
4) Matches/Lighters are a Tool and Not a Toy
5) Changing batteries on smoke and/or CO detectors with the clock change “Change your Clock, Change your Battery”
6) Kitchen Safety
7) Chimney Fire Safety
8) Proper Fire Extinguisher Use
9) Exiting a 2nd floor bedroom filling with smoke with a warm door and smoke alarm ringing
