The following information is posted from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation:

The annual New York State Spring Burn Ban begins today,
March 16, and runs through May 14. Open burning is the single greatest cause of wildfires in our state. Conditions for wildfires are heightened in springtime when most wildfires occur. The annual ban has decreased spring wildfires by nearly 43% since it began in 2009.
