Water Main Repairs Create Temporary Hydrants

With extensive repairs and replacement of the underground water mains in the Oregon Rd corridor of the Town of Cortlandt, the Lake Mohegan Fire District was faced with temporary above ground 4 inch water mains with temporary hydrants that flow 70psi. With this, a preplan has been established on how to deal with utilizing these temporary hydrants. These temporary hydrants are made of PVC piping, therefore the normal supply hose operation of wrapping the supply hose around the hydrant cannot be used, as the PVC will break. Firefighters instead will have to wrap a sturdier, stationary object, such as a tree. The standard hydrants in the repair/replacement zone have been covered with a black plastic bag and cannot be utilized. The second temporary change is that the standard hydrant wrench cannot be used to open these hydrants and water mains. Instead, the contractor, Metra Delmar Co, has installed a plastic "T" valve on these hydrants, along with a 5" connection so our 5" supply hose valve can be attached without any problems. The contractor also supplied the LMFD with a pipe wrench and cresent wrench, which has been placed in the first due engine's hydrant box, just in case of a problem with the plastic valve on the temporary hydrant. If more water pressure or volume is needed for a fire, the FD will have to stretch 5" supply hose from a standard hydrant on Oregon Road outside the affected area. These are the pictures of the temporary hydrants along Adams Rush Rd, Cortlandt Ave, and Durrin Ave off of Oregon Rd. All this information and pictures have been provided by Chief Brian Wolert.
