On Wednesday night 5/31/23, Mohegan FD began training with Northeast Squad Concepts on boat and water rescue operations. The Mohegan FD has numerous lakes, ponds, and streams throughout our district and this training is very important for that reason. Wednesday night was the lecture part of this training series. The lecture was then followed up on Saturday 6/3/23 and Sunday 6/4/23 with hands-on water and boat training on Lake Mohegan. The hands-on training included basic boat operations and practical skill exercises on boat and surface water rescue operations. Instructors Barry and Donovan, both FEMA USAR Rescue Specialists (Massachusetts Task Force 1), delivered this training on different boat maneuvers and water rescue operations. This training is extremely important to learn the different techniques of getting victims onto the boat safely and efficiently. We would like to thank Northeast Squad Concepts for providing us with this valuable training and making our members more knowledgeable and efficient in water rescue operations. Marine 37 is a new edition to our fire dept. this unit will be placed into service shortly. The boat is a 2021 Mercury inflatable boat and is replacing our older aluminum marine unit affectionately named “Boat 1”. This older boat is at least 50 years old and needed replacement and upgrades. On top of the new boat, Mohegan FD also purchased new water rescue equipment including boat accessories, water rescue ropes, new rescuer and victim personal flotation devices, rescuer helmets plus all the necessary accessories including strobe lights and whistles. The FD also purchased cold water/ice rescue Mustang suits for water/ice rescue operations. |
